Recently, the coherent population transfer has been extensively studied in semiconductors, such as quantum wells and quantum dots (QDs) . The interaction of electrons confined in double quantum dot structures with electromagnetic driving fields has attracted much attention in the past decade.

Researchers at State Key Laboratory of High Field Laser Physics——Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fines Mechanics (SIOM/China) have proposed an implementation of the adiabatic technique in a system of two coupled QDs with a bias voltage. Proper combination of the pump laser pulse and the tunnel-coupling pulse allows an almost complete population transfer from the state without excitations to the indirect exciton state and the coherent superposition of the two states. The electron–hole pair confined in a QD molecule could be suggested as optically driven quantum gate. [Photonics and Nanostructures – Fundamentals and Applications 9 (2011) 174–178]
