Abstract:
Filamentation is a spectacular effect occurring during the propagation of intense ultrashort laser pulses in air and other transparent media. Nonlinear optical effects conspire to form and maintain a contracted pulse with peak intensity sufficient to ionize the medium over very long distances. In this talk, I will first briefly introduce the basic principles of femtosecond laser filamentation. Then, I will discuss in more detail the progress concerning its application: a virtual RF antenna, air laser, energy deposition in air and water, as well as our project “Laser Lightning Rod” (A FET-open project) supported by the European Commission in the framework of HOROZON 2020.
