Ultra-thin Ce:YAG Scintillation Crystal in High-resolution X-ray Image System

Update time: 2014-06-25

Recently, ultra-thin Ce:YAG scintillation crystal was well developed by the researchers in the Key Laboratory of Materials for High Power Laser, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The scintillation crystal is the key element to convert the high energy ray to ultraviolet or visible light, which can be collected by the commercial detector. The thickness of scintillation crystal is only 30-45um with the diameter of 30mm. High-resolution X-ray images were obtained with the cooperation with Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics CAS (Figure 1). It can be seen that better image quality is yielded with scintillation crystal developed in SIOM, comparing with that in Crytur of Czech Republic. This result will be presented in the International Workshop on Radiation Imaging Detectors (iWoRID, Jun 22-26, Italy).

Crytur is world-leading company in the growth of scintillation crystal and development of high-energy detector. Ce:YAG is a new mixed rare-earth single crystal of high density featuring high light yield and short decay time, and extensively used in detection of high-energy ray, nuclear physics, safety inspection and military affairs. The high quality image result indicates that the Chinese scientific research of scintillation crystal has reached the international level in the detection of high-energy ray. The higher-resolution image will be obtained by the cooperation with the leading research institutes or universities. Besides, the polishing process and measurement is supported by Advanced Machining and Testing CenterJoint Laboratory on High Power Laser and Physics in SIOM.
