Recently, Dr. Ting-Chung Poon was awarded the Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientist of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in recognition of his exceptional scholarly merit and extraordinary efforts to collaborative research with the Shanghai Institute of Optic and Fine Mechanics (SIOM). Li Ruxin, director of SIOM, issued a certificate signed by the CAS President Lu Yongxiang. More than 40 researchers and postgraduates participated the ceremony, which was followed by an interesting seminar presented by Dr. Ting-Chung Poon.
Dr. Ting-Chung Poon is a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering atVirginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (USA). Professor Poon has been engaged in information optics, optical scanning holography and three-dimensional display technology for over 30 years. His work, including invention of optical scanning holography technology (OSH), has been published in more than 3 monographs by Springer. As an internationally distinguished researcher in holography, Dr. Poon currently serves as Division Editor for Applied Optics. Dr. Poon is a Fellow of the OSA and the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). He is also a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
During his stay in SIOM, Professor Ting-Chung Poon visited information optics laboratory, and proposed a joint research program on three-dimensional holographic optical scanning technology. The program, which is under way, will fill the gap in the scanning holographic technology in our country, and help to improve our remote three-dimensional object detection capability.
The Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientist of Chinese Academy of Sciences is the CAS’s top recognition for outstanding cooperative work. The award was created in 2009 honoring the foreign scientists’ exceptional scholarly merit with a primary emphasis on the collaboration with their Chinese partners to advance the research at the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
