Plasma Physics and High Intensity Research at ELI Beamlines

Abstract:

ELI-Beamlines (ELI-BL), one of the three pillars of the Extreme Light Infrastructure endeavour, will be in a unique position to perform research in high-energy-density-physics (HEDP), plasma physics and ultra-high intensity (UHI) e >1022W=cm2T laser plasma interaction. This talk will describe the scientific objectives and the current status of P3 (plasma physics platform) at ELI Beamlines, where the next generation of high intensity and plasma physics experiments will be performed. In particular, the talk will also describe two different regimes of commissioning experiments planned for in P3: (a) using high repetition rate L3 laser (10 J, < 30 fs, 10 Hz) and (b) using high energy L4 laser (1.5 kJ, 1 shot a minute, programmable time duration). Future experiments with L4 laser in P3 will enable operation at unprecedented power of 10 PW.

Along with developing the P3 platform, the talk will also describe recent experimental results from the group in the fields of laboratory astrophysics and high intensity laser matter interaction.

 

Biography:

He has received PhD in California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, California, USA. and M.S. in Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, USA. His research is on high power laser plasma and ultra-intense laser physics experiments. He is the principle researcher in ELI Beamlines, and collaborates with SG-II team on the ultra laser plasma measurement.
