Abstract: Many of the performance limits of conventional optical fibres are a consequence of the fact that light in such fibres travels through a solid glass core. Alternative optical fibre designs using novel waveguide physics and utilising a hollow core can overcome these limits, sometimes by several orders of magnitude. The talk will describe how the work of the last few years has already demonstrated such superior performance in several characteristics and what prospects there are for further improvements.
