Department of High-power Laser Optics Technology and Engineering in SIOM was established in September 2023. Guided by the development scheme of the institute, the department is committed to the basic research and engineering and batch supply of optical components, aiming at the important requirements of high power laser systems, precision lithography system and photoelectric system in extreme working environment, so as to ensure the development and capacity building of our engineering system and play an irreplaceable role in related major national tasks. By July 2026, it had won 10 national awards and 21 provincial and ministerial awards. The department currently has more than 400 employees and 87 students, including 69 people with subtropical high and above, and 64 people with various talent plans.

The main research direction of the department is laser components and laser component support technology. The laser components include: 1) laser films such as extreme ultraviolet optical films, deep ultraviolet laser films, mid-infrared laser films, high-power laser films, ultrafast laser films, space laser films, etc. 2) Surface microstructures such as pulse compression grating, spectral beam combining grating, micro-lens array, etc. 3) photoelectric devices such as high power pulsed xenon lamps, new photoelectric materials and devices, etc. Laser component support technologies include: 1) optical precision manufacturing such as ultra-precision optical component design and manufacturing, shape control and manufacturing of optical components applied in extreme conditions etc., 2) precision optical metrology technologies such as research on new technologies and methods of metrology and characterization, development of new measurement instruments, development of test standards and reference materials, etc., 3) damage detection technologies such as research on interaction between laser and materials, and laser conditioning technology.

The department has a complete ultra-precision optical processing and assembly platform, thin film material coating and processing platform, meter-scale microstructure optical element fabrication and processing platform, high-power pulsed xenon lamp fabrication platform, thin film elements testing and characterization platform, optical metrology platform, phase characterization platform, etc., which realizes advanced optical element manufacturing and provides important guarantee for the engineering systems.

The department includes five secondary units:

1) Advanced Optical Manufacturing Center

This center is the earliest unit in China engaged in the research on processing technology of high-power optical components. It has established a world-class research platform for processing and testing technology of high-power optical components. It is one of the best research units for ultra-precision optical manufacturing at home and abroad. AOM center has a series of key technologies such as low defect and efficient research and polishing, ripple suppression, full frequency nanometer precision figuring, and high-precision surface shape measurement for meter level aspherical laser components throughout the entire chain, pioneering the international "magic angle-step state" magnetorheological ripple-free polishing technology, robot hyper-narrow edge effect conformal processing technology and developing related equipments. The core technologies are independently controllable, supporting the international highest power laser, international largest pulse compression grating, and mass production for major science equipment, meeting the strategic needs of the country, and promoting the technological progress of ultra-precision manufacturing technology and related industries.

2) Thin Film Optics R&D Center

Thin Film Optics R&D Center is one of the R&D centers with the longest history and the deepest technical accumulation in China, and has always been one of the leading research institutions in this field. In order to meet the needs of the country's urgent high-power laser system and photoelectric system in extreme service environment, the center is committed to the basic research and engineering technology development of high-power laser thin film components, high-power laser diffraction gratings, laser-material interaction and so on. High-power laser thin film components have won the international competition of laser induced damage threshold (LIDT) for many times, and are the main suppliers of high LIDT components in high-power laser systems such as Xi He, SEL-100PW and Shenguang facilities. Based on the ultra-large aperture reflective single static exposure technology pioneered by the institute, the world's largest aperture (1620mm×1070mm) seamless pulse compression grating has been fabricated. The only full-process R&D production line of combined beam grating in China used in different wavelength from blue to far-infrared has been created has been created, and the results have been successfully applied to all domestic high power laser demand units.

3) Electric Light Source Technology R&D Center

Electric Light Source Technology R&D Center has been engaged in research of laser pumping light source since its establishment in the 1960s, and has formed a team with solid theoretical foundation and strong development ability, complete research and production facilities and automatic light source testing equipment, which has made outstanding contributions to the vigorous development of optical component technology in China. The main function of the laboratory is to provide high strength, long life and high efficiency pulsed xenon lamps for SG-series facilities.

4) Optical Testing and Characterization Center

This center is driven by national major project testing requirements and focused on developing precision optical materials and optical components required for applications such as laser fusion and ultra-intense ultrafast lasers. The center specializes in research and development of innovative metrology instruments and technologies for optical material characterization, optical surface metrology, surface defect detection, spectral characterization, etc. It aims to establish testing standards for relevant fields and provide standardized testing services.

5) Shanghai Hengyi Optics and Fine Mechanics Co., Ltd

Shanghai Hengyi Optics and Fine Mechanics Co., Ltd was restructured and established in December 2001. It is a wholly-owned holding company of Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. It is mainly engaged in the mass manufacturing of precision optical components, precision machining and the development of opto-mechanical integrated products. It has made important contributions to the completion of precision machining tasks in China's major national projects such as SG-series high-power laser devices, lunar exploration and manned space flight and other special projects.
