From August 11 to 20, 2019, Prof. Bahaa E A Saleh from the University of Central Florida (UCF) visited SIOM as a CAS Distinguished Scientist under CAS President International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI). Prof. SHAO Jianda, Prof. ZHANG Long, Prof. LENG Yuxin, Prof. YI Kui and other researchers attended this event.

On August 12, on behalf of SIOM, Prof. ZHANG Long awarded Prof. Bahaa Saleh the certificate of the CAS Distinguished Scientist. On August 13, Prof. Bahaa Saleh made an invited presentation with the topic “Quantum and Classical entanglement”. In this presentation, by employing the quantum and classical theory, he did detailed introduction of entanglement, further elaborated the optical design and implementation of classical entanglement, and proved that Bell's inequality could be violated in classical optics.

On August 20, Prof. Bahaa Saleh made another invited presentation with the topic “Subsurface Imaging: A New Discipline” at the 52nd “Qinghe” Seminar. In this presentation, he introduced the subsurface imaging techniques based on different principles, such as optics, acoustics, magnetism, electricity, and further elaborated similar calculation methods for image reconstruction in these different subsurface image techniques. Furthermore, the optical diffraction tomography (ODT) technique was taken as an example to illustrate the calculation method of obtaining the subsurface object image from the interferometric measurement of multiple illumination angle diffraction fields. During the presentation, attendees and Professor Saleh had in-depth discussions and exchanges on physical principles, experimental methods, research experience, research hotspots, etc.

During his visit, Prof. Bahaa Saleh visited several laboratories of SIOM, including State Key Laboratory of High Field Laser Physics, Key Laboratory of Quantum Optics, Laboratory of Thin Film Optics, and Joint Laboratory on High Power Laser and Physics. He also visited Xi’an Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics and Fudan University.

Bahaa E. A. Saleh has been Dean of CREOL, the College of Optics and Photonics at the University of Central Florida, since January 2009. His research contributions cover a broad spectrum of topics in optics and photonics including statistical and quantum optics, optical communication and signal processing, nonlinear optics, photodetectors, image processing, and vision.

He is the author of three books, Photoelectron Statistics, Fundamentals of Photonics, and Introduction to Subsurface Imaging, as well as more than 600 papers. He is the recipient of the 1999 OSA Esther Hoffman Beller Award for outstanding contributions to optical science and engineering education, the 2004 SPIE BACUS award for his contribution to photomask technology, the 2006 Kuwait Prize for his contributions to optical science, the 2008 OSA Distinguished Service Award, and the 2013 C. E. K. Mees Medal for lifelong multidisciplinary contributions to statistical optics, quantum optics and image science.
