　  Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was established in 1964. It is the earliest and the largest institute specializing in the laser science and technology in China. It has become a comprehensive institute aimed at exploring significant basic and applied basic frontiers in modern optics, developing large-scale laser engineer technologies and exploiting laser and optoelectronic hi-tech applications.
　  During the past 45 years since its establishment, SIOM has made important contributions to our country. The institute has constructed a series of Shanghai high-power large-scale laser systems, which is the only one in China and ranked among a few giant laser system in the world: research on a new generation of ultra-intense, ultra-short laser system developed initiatively has made breakthrough progress
　  The Rb-atomic Bose-Einstein condensation was firstly observed in China, which enhanced the coherent mass-wave research in China to the international advanced level. The first-set of satellite-bore lasers which has initiative intellectual property has been successfully developed and used in the laser altimeter of the “Chang E”satellite. The development of various laser devices, laser and optoelectronic function materials also reached world advanced level.
　  With the coming of the 21 century, SIOM has carried out the CAS policies conscientiously, strengthened the original innovation and the innovation development of key technology; continued to conduct the construction of laser large-scale program actively, and makes more and new contributions to economic construction, national defense security and social progresses in China.
