The laboratory was founded in December 1989. The major research directions are laser cooling of gas atoms and its application to science and high technology. At present, the researches on Bose-Einstein condensation, cold atomic physics, cold atomic clock, quantum optics and biophotonics are pursuing.

In March 2002, the laboratory first observed the phenomenon of phase transition of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in China, and then, achieved a BEC on an atomic-chip in 2008. In 2008, the laboratory have cooled Rb87 atoms in a ceramic integrating sphere and obtained an integrating sphere atom clock signal and Ramsey fringes. In 2010, the laboratory firstly reported guiding cooled atoms in a high field seeking magnetic state via radio-frequency field in the world. These results show that the research for cooling of gas atoms in China has been in the advanced rank of the world.

   1. The first Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) in China and the BEC in optical lattice

   2.Rb87 atomic fountain clock

3.The BEC on an atomic chip

   4. Guiding cooled atoms in a high field seeking magnetic state via radio-frequency field

   5. The microwave cavity and the clock signal for integrating sphere atom clock
